October Photo Journal -- Day 31

I did it! I did it! I actually posted a picture for every day this month. It was a great celebration for my three year blogaversary. Some days were kind of a stretch for finding something to take a picture of, but it was kind of a fun challenge. This was a really good month to choose, because we had a lot of things going on.

Today was an amazingly fun day. We started out the day going to worship with my son and his wife at the church the hubby and I went to in college.

At the end of the service, we were asked to reflect on what God has done for us. Here is a quote from my son's blog post I read last night that sums up part of what I was thinking:

The fact that we are all born so screwy and "jacked up" and that God still sent His Son, Jesus Christ to "live the life we should have lived and die the death we should have died," to borrow a common phrase among my friends, is mind-blowingly comforting and humbling.

That (the Gospel) in and of itself is enough to be thankful for.

But I was also struck (to the point of tears) with thinking about how that church was where my hubby and I began worshiping together as a couple. Almost 30 years ago. And there we sat today with our son and daughter-in-law. Worshiping. Together. They both love the Lord. I whispered that to my hubby and said, "What more could we have asked for?" It made both of us cry.

For lunch we went to a Chinese restaurant. It's a tradition. I'll explain.

When the kids were growing up, the hubby and I felt that we should not celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense. We had no desire to answer the doorbell rings, so we decided it would be fun to go out to eat. I remember thinking and thinking about where we could go so the kids wouldn't have to see scary costumes. I finally came up with going to a Chinese restaurant since the Chinese don't celebrate Halloween. It became a tradition for us. We even continued it for the years we lived in Singapore. Caleb and Megan went to eat at a Chinese restaurant the year they were at the same college together. Sooo to wrap up this long explanation.... after church this morning we were trying to figure out where to go and I remembered there was a good Chinese restaurant in town and Caleb said, "Well it is Halloween." That sealed it for us.

And yes, it was as good as I remembered.

We spent the afternoon giving Caleb and Amanda the "How and Where We Fell In Love Tour of Campus." And even reenacted our first kiss. (Ummm...that really wasn't a chore to do....) (and I'm so glad he kissed me that day 28 years ago.)

The Bench is looking a little beat up. I hope they don't take it away. Ever.

Then we wandered around campus for a while.

And then, as if that wasn't a great day so far, we said good-bye to Caleb and Amanda. Wait that didn't sound right.... After we reluctantly said goodbye to Caleb and Amanda, we sat in the car a bit and tried to think of what we could do next. I rattled off several suggestions and the last one was, "We could drive to the tiny little town my mom grew up in and look at the farm my mom grew up on and the farm where my uncle lived."  I think it's been at least 15 years since I had been there.  My sweet patient hubby thought that sounded great, so off we went. We drove around the town my mom went to school in, and after that minute-and-a-half was up, we drove by my uncle's farm and then the farm my mom grew up on.

My uncle's house. I will tell you my aunt would not be happy to see the condition of this house. She was from the south and had the outside redone and it looks looked so much like a Grand Southern Mansion.

Then we drove to where my mom grew up. My cousin and his wife live there and farm the land. And an even better bonus... they were home! So we got to have a wonderful visit with them. They were gracious enough to let us wander around the house so I could run down memory lane. I must say, that I am pretty sure that my cousin has somehow made the house a lot smaller that it was when I was a little girl. Isn't it funny how we remember things in our minds eye the same size as when we were small?

The house is 90 years old. It's a 1920 Craftsman style home with a lot of really neat details on the inside. I enjoyed myself thoroughly looking all around and going through the memories: from the sink that used to be in the mudroom with the Lava soap laying on it that my grandpa used to wash his hands, to the beautiful built-in buffet in the dining room where we hung our Christmas stockings (that were Grandpa's red-heeled socks), to the squeaky stairs we would sneak down on Christmas morning. I even remember my grandma standing on those stairs waving at us as we arrived for a visit. That really is amazing since my grandma died when I was 2 1/2.

I am really grateful for my hubby being willing to go to those places with me today. Very sweet of him. It was a great way to end my October Photo Journal.

Happy New Month!

October Photo Journal -- Day 30

We went to a football game at our Alma Mater today.

This was my favorite part of the game:

I love the marching band! My hubby marched in college and it's always fun to watch the band and to watch him watch the band. Since today was Homecoming our college had their Alumni Band marching at halftime. Band Members who have marched in the past can march for the Homecoming game. Hubby has done that a few times.

Here is Hubby talking to a college friend who marched with the Alumni Band this year. It's been a lot of years (10+?) since we've seen him.

Yes, I did really take a few pictures of the actual football players.

Well, maybe not a few. I only found two I took after I downloaded my pictures. (If you haven't guessed, I'm not a huge fan of the actual game of football.)

Our Alma Mater played our kids' school. Here's our kids singing their school's song. Aren't they cute? Sort of?
It was a fun day.

Tomorrow we get to give our sweet daughter-in-law the tour of campus and tell her the story (with visuals) how how we fell in love. (I know she's so excited.)  :)  (I know I love to reminisce.)

October Photo Journal -- Day 29

I'm really struggling with what to take a picture of today. It was not a very eventful day. I woke up too early, then got sleepy before much of the morning was gone and crawled back into bed and slept for almost three hours. What a slug! No photo-op there!

Then I soaked in the tub for a very long time. (and oh it felt soooo nice!)

My photo today is of the hubby mowing the lawn for the last time this year. (He's behind the little tree.)

Exciting, huh?

But mostly I wanted to show my readers the great view we have. We have really loved the field next to our house. And even more so, we have loved watching the sunsets.

Here's a picture I took of a sunset in August. We feel very blessed to be able to witness God's painting every night.

Tomorrow will be more eventful. I promise. And maybe even more than one picture! WooHoo!

October Photo Journal -- Day 28

We had quite the windstorm roll through this part of the country Tuesday and Wednesday. I struggled through it while I did all that heavy duty shopping in The Big City. :)

This morning I looked out the window of our four season porch and saw this:

Do you see the glass table-top on the concrete patio? All in one piece? Can you believe it? We are totally amazed that it didn't shatter. (And very thankful!)

Today the weather has been a lot more calm and even sunny!

October Photo Journal -- Day 27

Ready for today's totally exciting photo?

Are you sure?

I'm sure it's nothing you would expect....

Ta Da!!!

I thought these new carts at Target were really neat! :) They were very smooth to drive and certainly easy to fill up.

This was obviously taken before I filled it up. I only spent 13 cents more at Target than I spent yesterday at IKEA. I laughed when I realized the totals were so close.

By the way..... I love Target. :)

We're back home now. It's always hard for me to come back to this small town. But just for a couple of days before we take off to see our kids this weekend! I am so excited to see them.

October Photo Journal -- Day 26

I spent a good part of my day at these places.

I knew I was in trouble when I saw that IKEA has Christmas things out. I restrained fairly well, but did not come out unscathed. :)

October Photo Journal -- Day 25

The hubby has meetings in The Big City and I got to come along! The highlight of today was dinner with our bestest friends who we don't get to see near enough. He used to be our pastor. I really miss his preaching.
At one point we lived only 1/2 mile apart. Now, due to their move and now our move we live close to three hours away from each other. Tonight's dinner was precious time that went by way too quickly.

October Photo Journal -- Day 24

To risk sounding like I'm whining again... I had a headache again today. UGH. Thanks to my bloggy friends for praying for me. I hoping a good night's sleep will get rid of it for good.

I took the opportunity of wanted to lay low to catch up on some shows I had on the DVR. (Have I said how much I love having a DVR?)
Not a great picture, I know. I took it with my phone.

Prayer?

Would anyone out there in blogland like to pray for my headache to go
 away?

October Photo Journal -- Day 23

Day three of a headache = not much activity. I did do a load of laundry and cleaned all the mirrors in the house. WooHoo.

Okay. Enough whining.

Hubby worked hard to get the garden ready for the winter and for spring planting. Doesn't it look pretty?

Our part of the garden is the rectangle part. The rest is the neighbors. This next summer will actually be the first time ever we have had our own full garden. I hope it does well. We truly are amateurs.

October Photo Journal -- Day 22

These photos are from a couple of days ago. Today I just hung out at home with Day Two of a headache.

I saw this when I was out for a walk the other day. I just had to take some photos.

Yep. A Prairie Dog Exhibit. They smell bad. But are kinda cute.

October Photo Journal -- Day 21

Today's photo is a picture of the newly painted front door, porch, railings and posts. It looks a lot more fresher. More prettier. More better. Ummm... We're really happy with how it turned out!

A Random Dozen Answers to a Dozen Random Questions!

1. Do you prefer to read the book or see the movie?
It depends on which came first. I think it's tacky when a book is written after a movie that was popular.

Recently I read To Kill a Mockingbird and then really wanted to watch the movie. The movie did not disappoint and I think reading the book first helped me understand the movie better.

I love to see how the movie visualizes what I visualized as I was reading the book. When The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe movie came out I loved seeing everything I had imagined. (My son even said, "That's exactly how I pictured Lucy.") (Oh, and can I say? I am so excited to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader!) (In theaters December 10!)

2. What is your favorite holiday and why?
We've had some pretty great Thanksgivings lately. We have loved inviting all sorts of people to join us for Thanksgiving dinner. It's been so fun to have our table full of family and friends. And the food? I just love the simple menu. It's all pretty much a given with the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc. (Oh the carbohydrates!)

3. Which do you like better - the mountains or the beach?
MOUNTAINS! Who wouldn't love this? (I actually "borrowed" this picture from my son-in-law. This was the view from the cabin they rented for their honeymoon. Estes Park. Oh. My.)

4. If money were no consideration, what vehicle would you drive?
A Toyota Highlander with a sunroof. Oasis Green. Wait. That is what I drive! How amazing is that?! (If I were to add anything to that it would have GPS and a place to hook up my iPod.)

5. What is your favorite cold-weather beverage?
Iced Tea. I drink it all year round.

6. How do you communicate most often with your friends: phone, email, text, face-to-face, or Facebook?
Email or Facebook. I don't have any friends here where I live that I can communicate face-to-face with.

7. How do you receive your mail? Mailbox on the porch, at the end of the driveway, down the street, or post office box?
The mailbox is at the end of the driveway.

8. Of the four basic personality types - sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic, and choleric - which is your strongest? Which is your least evident? (Here's the definition of those four types.)
Oh, I don't know. Maybe a bit of Melancholic with a bit of Choleric tossed in. Definitely no Phlegmatic in there. (A side note here: I think the whole personality-type stuff can put people in too much of a box. While I do agree that people have different personalities, constantly trying to label someone so they fit in a box does more of a disfavor than is helpful.) (There. I feel better now having gotten that off my chest. Whew.)

9. What do you miss the most about being 20?
My body. I thought I was overweight then. Sheesh.

10. How long from the time you get up, does it take you to get ready to walk out the door in the morning?
Usually somewhere around 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I think I'm high maintenance. Sorry Hubby!

11. Who handles the car maintenance and pays the bills in your family?
The hubby pays the bills. He likes it. Go figure.
He takes care of the maintenance of his car and I take care of mine. (Soooo not my favorite thing to do.) You can read about my latest escapade here. (And by "take care of mine", I mean I drive it to the mechanic and tell them to do whatever they do.)

12. For those in the US, how many states have you visited? For those outside the US, how many provinces/other countries have you visited?
I've been to somewhere around 38 states. And for kicks, I'll answer how many countries I've visited. (Just because I used to live in Singapore and at one time I could have been classified as "outside the US".) I've visited around 14 countries (if you count the thousand or so times I landed in Tokyo. I did spend the night there once due to a canceled flight, so I guess it counts.) (I have also been to 4 provinces in Canada.) Jeepers, that's a lot of traveling.

October Photo Journal --Day 19

Today was an ordinary day. The big activity of the day was going to the grocery store.

Exciting, I know.

I really miss having a really big grocery store to shop at. I went into a couple good sized stores last weekend with the kids and oh, did I drool!

But there are a couple of unique things about the store I shop in here.

One is that there is someone who actually pushes the cart of groceries out to the car and PUTS THEM IN THE CAR FOR ME!

Here is my oh-so-stealth-photo:

Yes, I sat in the car in the parking lot and waited for this photo-op.

The other thing I like about this grocery store is the meat counter. They weigh and package the meat however I want. Here's another stealth photo.

Oh, yeah, I am a regular paparazzi.

October Photo Journal -- Day 18

This weekend we finally found something we've been looking for for 3 1/2 months. A small cabinet to fit a small space to replace this awesome looking mixer box:

While I love my mixer, the box just wasn't quite doing it.

So after looking, and looking, and looking with a little Internet browsing thrown in, we found a cabinet that would fit in that spot and would hold the telephone and quite likely, lots of other junk.

Some assembly required.

But my awesome hubby persevered and now we have this:

Now to choose what stuff to fill it up with... I'm sure that won't take long.
